Hokkaido is the northernmost and largest prefecture of Japan, with population of 5.6 million. Since 1980s, Hokkaido experienced structural changes in its daily newspaper market. While some new dailies emerge, the second largest local daily and several smaller ones in remote cities, have perished. The largest prefecture-wide daily, the Hokkaido Shimbun, has expanded its circulation from 1.0 to 1.2 million for the morning edition, but lost almost 20% of the evening edition readers in 1980 over this period. Share of households which subscribe both the morning and evening editions, or the "set" subscribers, dropped sharply from 82% to 54%.
